ARAU: The 60,000-strong Thai community in the country deserves to be accorded bumiputra status.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz who made the suggestion said the community should enjoy whatever privileges extended to other bumiputras.
He said the Thai community had been in the country for hundreds of years and most of them lived in the northern states and Kelantan.
The government, he said, should accord them bumiputra status just like the Kadazans and Ibans.
“We know that the Thai community has been living at border areas in the northern states and Kelantan for a long time,” he told a press conference after launching the Malaysia Siam Association annual general meeting at the Cheng Aun Kong hall in Jejawi near here.
Also present was association president Senator Siw Chun Eam.
Mohamed Nazri, who is also patron of the association, said the Thai community should not be left out in the country’s development, be it in the education or economic areas.
”I will try to seek a RM1mil allocation from the government to build a hall and a crematorium for the community,” he said.
