KANGAR - Malaysians of all races Saturday night welcomed the "Loy Krathong" festival in Jejawi near here, despite the traditional celebration being held later than its traditional date.
According to the Thai calendar, the celebration begins Nov 8 but the organisers pushed the event to Saturday as a mark of respect for the Ramadhan fasting month.
Malaysian Siamese Association president, Senator Siw Chun a/p Eam said the Loy krathong festival was not a religious celebration but more of an event associated with Thai culture and customs.
"Loy Krathong has been adapted to current needs and it has become a festival for all Malaysians," he told Bernama at the celebration.
Saturday night revellers placed thousands of "krathong" (lotus) flowers, made from coloured papers, in the JeJawi Canal . At midnight, as the high tide began to subside, the flowers drifted to sea, which symbolised getting rid of "bad luck".
Siw said the highlight of the celebration was the Loy Krathong beauty pageant to be held tonight with the participation of 18 contestants.
The Regent of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail, is expected to open the function Sunday night.
